Design ideas for traditional kitchens

The kitchen truly is the heart of any home. It’s a space where memories are made and culinary adventures are had. Choosing a new kitchen, therefore, is no small task, and for those who adore timeless elegance, traditional kitchens offer a charm like no other.

These spaces invite warmth, comfort and a rich sense of history, blending classic design with contemporary conveniences. Here, we will explore some exquisite design elements that can truly elevate your traditional kitchen, weighing up both the benefits of each style, as well as the potential drawbacks.

Exposed brickwork – a touch of rustic heritage

There’s an unmistakable character and warmth that exposed brickwork can bring to your traditional kitchen. It instantly adds a historical, textured focal point, creating a cosy and inviting atmosphere for friends and family to soak in and cherish.

Exposed brick is effortlessly stylish, offering a rustic, timeless look that never truly goes out of fashion. It introduces a unique texture and can even enhance insulation. When properly sealed, it’s also quite durable.

However, untreated brick can be prone to dust and may require specific cleaning. It can also be challenging to hang items on, and significant damage can be costly to repair.

Hardwood flooring – enduring beauty underfoot

The rich, natural beauty of hardwood flooring is a quintessential element for many traditional kitchens, exuding sophistication and warmth.

Hardwood floors are visually appealing, adding elegance and a comfortable feel underfoot. They can significantly increase your home’s resale value and, with proper care, are incredibly durable and can last for decades. Engineered wood offers better moisture resistance, making it a wise investment for traditional kitchens.

But, while durable, hardwood is susceptible to water damage if spills are not promptly addressed. It requires regular cleaning and occasional refinishing, and can be prone to scratches and dents, especially in high-traffic areas.

Granite countertops – hard-wearing elegance

Many traditional kitchens feature appropriately weighty and durable countertops. And one material that crops up time and time again in this conversation is granite.

The timeless charm of granite, at least in part, derives from its one-of-a-kind appearance. Each granite slab is unique in its colours and veining, giving it a distinct sense of character over more uniform materials. Moreover, granite boasts excellent heat resistance and durability, meaning you won’t need to worry about wear and tear.

The key limitation of granite as a countertop material is its porous nature, meaning food and drink can permeate the surface and create stains more easily than other materials. This can be negated with regular cleaning and care when cooking, but it is still worth bearing in mind when designing your kitchen.

Layered patterns – a look that commands attention

Incorporating layered patterns is a delightful way to add depth, personality and a bespoke feel to traditional kitchens, creating a rich visual tapestry. This could be through wallpaper, fabrics or even varying textures in your cabinetry.

Layering patterns allows for immense creativity, enabling you to blend different textures and designs to create a truly unique and intricate style. It adds visual interest and a sense of curated history, often found in well-loved traditional homes.

However, overdoing patterns can lead to a cluttered or overwhelming look. It requires a keen eye to balance different designs and ensure harmony within the space. If you’re having a hard time finding this balance, our talented team are on hand to help. Pinterest also offers a great starting point for this.

Antique accessories – curated nostalgia

Infusing traditional kitchens with antique decorations and accessories can tell a story, adding character and a sense of textured history to which modern pieces simply don’t hold a candle.

Antique accessories provide unique charm and a timeless elegance, compounding the vintage vibe of your kitchen. They can be conversation starters and make your space feel truly lived-in and loved. Well-chosen antiques can also appreciate in value, which is a rather nice bonus.

On the other hand, antiques may require more delicate care. Finding pieces that perfectly complement your kitchen’s existing style can also be a challenge, and they might be more fragile than their modern counterparts. If you’re scouting for hidden gems in a market or antique shop, ask questions and make sure the item works.

Shaker cabinets and pantries – practical class

Shaker cabinets are timeless, versatile and highly durable, often made from high-quality hardwoods. Their simple design makes them easy to clean and maintain, and they can be customised with various finishes and hardware to suit your specific aesthetic.

While versatile, shaker cabinets might be perceived as too simple by those desiring more ornate designs. Highly customised traditional storage solutions can also be a greater initial investment.

The pantry – a storage sanctuary

A well-designed pantry is a dream for traditional kitchens, offering outstanding organisation and a dedicated space for all your culinary needs.

Pantries provide extensive storage, helping to reduce kitchen clutter and keep your countertops clear. They can be tailored to your specific needs, housing everything from dry goods to small appliances, creating a highly functional and organised space. A walk-in pantry can even offer additional workspace.

Incorporating a pantry does require sufficient space, which might be a challenge in smaller kitchens. A large, fully stocked pantry can also require regular organisation to remain efficient. This is great for those who love alphabetising everything, less so for those with little time on their hands.

Coloured panelling – a traditional edge

Coloured panelling, whether beadboard or more ornate designs, can inject personality and a tasteful touch into traditional kitchens, offering a charming alternative to plain walls.

Panelling adds texture and architectural interest, instantly giving the character of your kitchen a tangible boost. It also presents a ripe opportunity to add a splash of colour and can be more durable and easier to clean than painted walls in high-traffic areas.

Something to bear in mind, though, is that, depending on the material, panelling can be prone to splitting or splintering over time. It may require ongoing maintenance and, if not chosen carefully, could potentially look dated.

All-white traditional kitchen – light, bright and airy

When it comes to traditional kitchens, colour can have a huge impact on the look, feel and mood of a space. The enduring appeal of an all-white palette creates a bright, clean and expansive feel that truly stands the test of time.

White kitchens are inherently timeless and versatile, offering a clean, crisp look. They also make the most of natural light, making smaller spaces feel larger and brighter.

However, white surfaces are less forgiving when it comes to showing dirt, smudges and spills, requiring more frequent cleaning. Without other contrasting elements, an all-white kitchen can sometimes feel cold or clinical. Discolouration can also be an issue over time with exposure to sunlight.

Farmhouse dining tables – the heart of family gatherings

A sturdy, inviting farmhouse dining table is often the central gathering point in traditional kitchens, embodying warmth, community and rustic charm.

Farmhouse tables are impressively sturdy and durable, designed to withstand years of family meals and activities, no matter how impassioned they might get. They bring a welcoming, rustic feel to the kitchen, promoting a sense of togetherness and comfort. Many are made from solid wood, hence their superb longevity.

On the downside, these tables can be very heavy, making them difficult to move. Plus, their rustic aesthetic might not appeal to those seeking a more sleek, minimal look.

Kitchen rugs – keeping things cosy

A well-chosen kitchen rug can soften the space, add a pop of colour and provide comfort in your traditional kitchen.

Rugs add a certain visual appeal and give you a chance to truly express your personal taste with the thousands of designs and styles available. As a knock-on bonus, they also provide cushioning for comfort, especially when standing for long periods, and can offer a layer of safety by reducing slips on hard floors.

But as you’ll no doubt be aware, kitchens are prone to spills and stains, meaning rugs will require regular and thorough cleaning. They can trap dust and allergens, and certain materials might even pose a fire hazard if placed too close to heat sources.

Chandeliers – unmatched opulence

Lighting is another area in which traditional kitchens can truly set themselves apart from more contemporary styles, swapping the cool subtlety of solutions like integrated LEDs with something a bit grander.

A chandelier is the perfect centrepiece for a large traditional kitchen, adding a further layer of refined elegance. It provides ambient lighting and adds a luxurious touch that can tie your desired look together in effortless style.

Although, chandeliers can be rather challenging to clean, especially those with intricate designs. They may also be too large or ornate for smaller kitchens, overwhelming and ultimately detracting from the space.

We recently had our new kitchen installed and couldn't be happier with the result. From start to finish, the experience was outstanding —every detail had been carefully thought through, combining style with practical functionality. The customer service throughout the process was equally impressive. Communication was clear, timely, and professional, and we always felt listened to. Any questions or changes were handled promptly and with a real sense of care and pride in the project. The quality of the kitchen itself is second to none. You can tell just by opening a drawer or running your hand along the worktops that this is a product built to last. Special mention has to go to the fitter, whose talent and attention to detail were exceptional. We’re absolutely thrilled with the end result and would recommend this team to anyone looking for a kitchen that delivers on both design and quality, backed by genuinely excellent service.

Excellent service from start to finish. Jason took our ideas and developed a perfect plan for our en suit bathroom. He gave us great advice about which materials worked well together and matched them to our idea of using brushed brass as the taps and shower fittings. Tony the fitter was an excellent craftsman. His work is exemplary. We are over the moon with the final result.

Premier Crafts redesigned & converted our kitchen, dining room and sun lounge extension into one open plan living area and refitted our utility room. Aaron led on the design and supported by Richard, they managed the project throughout. All the staff and workmen were friendly, trustworthy and professional. Much of the work was done whilst we were away on holiday. A couple of glitches were quickly sorted and the end result is exactly what we wanted. It looks fantastic. A big thank you to all involved, I have no hesitation in recommending this company.

Premier Crafts have been friendly, professional and efficient from the very first meeting I had with Rebecca at the Washington showroom to then discussing my kitchen design with Aaron at the Cleadon showroom. Aaron suggested great ideas for the best use of the space due to his expertise in design. During the kitchen fitting, Richard communicated all schedules to keep me up to date on the project which I found not only very considerate, but also helpful. Reese, Jake and Paul could not have worked harder to get the job done in the short time that had been advised. All of their finishing touches have been completed to a very high standard. I hugely appreciate all the extra personalised finishing touches that go over and above what is required. For example, the cleaning service offered once the kitchen had been fitted, plus the coasters and chopping board to match the work tops. I would highly recommend Premier Crafts to anyone who is looking for a new kitchen. Thanks again to all of you I have mentioned and the wider team for all your hard work.

Can’t rate the team at Premier crafts high enough. We had a kitchen and booth seating design thought out and with some minor tweaks from Aaron my dream kitchen was realised. We have secret doors with hidden wine racks a fantastic breakfast cupboard and pan drawers galore. The team were fantastic installing it with special thanks to Paul the fitter who really is a perfectionist. Can’t thank you all enough.

Had new kitchen installed by Premier crafts in February. From planning to final fitting everything was done professionally. Aaron was a great help putting the design together while Helen helped us decide which colour and pattern combination of doors, worktops and floor would work best for us. The fitting itself was well organised,. The old kitchen was dismantled and taken away on day one and replastered by the end of day two. Then electrician, plumber and fitter all worked together giving us a usable kitchen within just over a week. MJM flooring the finished the floor a few days later and we were done..We then had a visit from Helen who gave all the cupboards and draws a good clean which was a nice touch. A few days after the final payment had been made we discovered a couple of small chips on a kickboard and filler which were rectified hassle free with a quick phone call. All in all would highly recommend.

We couldn’t be happier with our superb new kitchen, designed and fitted by Premier Crafts. Within this project, Premier Crafts also assisted with a remodel, including knocking down a structural wall. We would highly recommend them and have used them in our previous house for a kitchen and two bathroom projects, a testament to their high quality service. They were able to translate our ideas into reality and make us aware of our options and key things to consider. They supported our unique design ideas and the finished product is better than we could imagine. Every member of the Premier Crafts team is really friendly and helpful, with really great communication and excellent customer service.
