Bedroom wardrobe design inspiration

The wardrobe is often seen by homeowners as a purely functional piece of furniture. A place to hang clothes and hide clutter. At Premier Crafts, we believe a wardrobe can be so much more than that. With the right wardrobe design, it can become a statement piece, a seamless part of your room’s architecture and a reflection of your personal style.

This blog post offers inspiration and ideas to help you see the potential of this often-overlooked element of your bedroom. We’ll explore how custom wardrobe design can transform a cluttered room into a serene sanctuary, and how clever design can make even the most awkward spaces beautiful and practical.

Maximising every inch with a built-in wardrobe

Our homes often present us with unique challenges when being adapted for modern living, from rooms with unconventional layouts to the ever-present need for more storage. This is where the magic of the built-in wardrobe truly shines. Unlike a freestanding unit that leaves awkward gaps and wasted space, a built-in wardrobe is designed to fit your room’s exact dimensions, from floor to ceiling and wall to wall.

This approach is particularly transformative in older properties with charming quirks, or even in newly converted spaces like attics which have awkward sloping ceilings. But built-ins aren’t just for sloping ceilings. They are the ultimate solution for any space where you want to maximise storage without compromising on aesthetics. A bespoke built-in can turn a chimney breast alcove into a stylish display area, or a small, unused corner into a functional home office nook, all seamlessly integrated into the wardrobe design.

Reflecting style with a modern mirrored wardrobe

Mirrors have long been used in interior design to create the illusion of space and to enhance natural light. Integrating them into your wardrobe design is a smart and stylish way to achieve both. A mirrored wardrobe can make a small bedroom feel significantly more spacious and open, bouncing light around the room and adding a touch of glamour.

For a truly dramatic effect, consider a wardrobe with full-height mirrored doors. Not only does this provide a convenient place to get dressed, but it also becomes a striking design feature in its own right. The reflection of the room creates a sense of depth and airiness, making the wardrobe feel less like a solid block of furniture and more like an integral part of the space.

Integrating technology with an entertainment hub

In the modern bedroom, the television is often a central feature. But a large, black screen can sometimes disrupt the serene atmosphere you’re trying to create.

A bespoke wardrobe offers a clever and stylish solution by integrating the TV seamlessly into its design.

One popular option is to have the TV hidden behind a sliding or hinged wardrobe door. When not in use, the TV is completely concealed, leaving an uninterrupted run of cabinetry. When you want to watch TV, simply slide or open the door to reveal the screen.

Alternatively, the TV can be recessed into a central section of the wardrobe, with doors and shelving built around it. This creates a dedicated media area that feels intentional rather than an afterthought.

Crafting the ultimate all-in-one

A bespoke wardrobe is an opportunity to consolidate multiple pieces of furniture into one seamless, space-saving unit. This is particularly beneficial in smaller bedrooms or for those who simply appreciate a streamlined, organised space.

One of the most sought-after features in modern wardrobe design is an integrated dressing table. This design replaces a separate dressing table with a dedicated area built directly into the wardrobe.

This might be a pull-out shelf that doubles as a vanity, or a central section of the wardrobe with a built-in counter, mirror and lighting. This solution saves significant floor space and creates a cohesive, luxurious feel, making your morning routine a pleasurable experience.

The area can be designed with specific drawers and compartments for makeup, jewellery and accessories, keeping everything tidy and within easy reach.

For those who work from home, a wardrobe can also be designed to incorporate a small, discreet desk area. A pull-out desk or a dedicated alcove with shelving can create a functional workspace that can be hidden away at the end of the day – creating that division between work and home life.

The doorway to sophisticated wardrobe design

The choice of wardrobe door significantly impacts both the look and functionality of your bedroom. There are several common types to consider.

Hinged doors are the traditional option, opening outwards into the room. They offer full access to the wardrobe interior, allowing a complete view of all contents, but they do require clear floor space in front to open properly.

Sliding doors, conversely, glide horizontally along a track, either on the inside or outside of the wardrobe frame. These are ideal for smaller rooms as they don’t protrude into the living space, though only one section of the wardrobe is accessible at a time.

Bi-fold doors fold in sections and slide along a track, collapsing to the side. They offer wider access than sliding doors while still saving space compared to traditional hinged options.

When it comes to style, doors can be either framed or unframed. Framed doors feature a visible frame around each panel, creating a more traditional look, as seen in popular Shaker-style designs. Unframed, as the name suggests, have no visible external frame, providing a clean and contemporary appearance, often utilised with mirrored or glass panels to create the illusion of more space.

It’s important to note that the material and finish you choose for your wardrobe will have a huge impact on the final look. From classic painted wood in a calming neutral shade to a bold, dark veneer, the options are endless. Consider a combination of materials, such as a sleek, matte finish with a warm wood accent, to add texture and interest.

Exploring other popular wardrobe design ideas

Bespoke cabinetry is constantly evolving with new trends and ideas emerging all the time. Here are a few more popular design ideas to inspire you:

Open wardrobe systems

Moving away from traditional doors, open wardrobe systems are becoming increasingly popular. These designs feature shelving, hanging rails, and drawers that are left exposed, creating a boutique-style, walk-in wardrobe feel. This works best for those who are naturally tidy and have a collection of clothes and accessories they want to display. It’s a great way to showcase a curated wardrobe and makes a powerful design statement, blurring the lines between storage and display. For those who embrace a minimalist lifestyle, an open wardrobe can also encourage conscious consumption, as every item is visible and accounted for.

The handleless look

For a minimalist aesthetic, a handleless wardrobe is an excellent choice. Push-to-open mechanisms or routed handles create an uncluttered surface that makes the room feel calm and contemporary. This design is perfect for modern interiors and can make even a very large wardrobe feel light and unobtrusive. It’s particularly effective when combined with high-gloss or matte finishes for an ultra-modern touch.

Statement lighting and display niches

While we’ve mentioned lighting for practicality, consider using it for dramatic effect. Beyond basic illumination, integrated LED strips can highlight specific sections or create ambient mood lighting within the wardrobe. Think about backlighting shelves for a luxurious glow or incorporating spotlights to draw attention to treasured items like handbags, shoes, or artwork displayed in dedicated niches. These display niches, offer an opportunity to personalise your space, turning functional storage into an elegant gallery. They allow you to infuse your personality into the design, making your wardrobe a true reflection of your style.

Integrated LED strip lighting and under-shelf lighting make it easier to find your clothes in the darker months and create a warm, inviting glow that adds a touch of luxury. You can also incorporate spotlights or downlights within the wardrobe’s frame to highlight specific features or create a sense of depth.

Integrated seating solutions

Across interior design forums and Pinterest boards, we are seeing wardrobes incorporate comfortable seating. This could be a built-in bench seat with storage underneath, perfect for putting on shoes or a quiet reading nook. Alternatively, a window seat integrated into the wardrobe structure can provide a cosy spot to relax while offering additional hidden storage.
