Design ideas for built-in wardrobes

Looking to introduce functional and beautiful storage into your home? We’ve got the design ideas for built-in wardrobes that you need in order to get inspired.

When it comes to smart interior design, built-in wardrobes are a key cornerstone of functional elegance, offering the perfect combination of storage efficiency and aesthetic appeal. Here at Premier Crafts, we tailor our bespoke built-in wardrobes to fit perfectly in our client’s home, maximising every inch of available space, whilst offering smart storage solutions. Over the years, we’ve completed a wide range of built-in wardrobe projects, all of which have been unique in their use of different design elements. So, today we’d like to offer some design ideas for built-in wardrobes, bringing you the inspiration you need to create something that’s functional, beautiful, and unique to your home.

Embrace neutral chic

The colours you choose to work with for your built-in wardrobe play a key role in tying together the overall aesthetic of your bedroom. After all, they’re going to be a large feature, so they’ll inevitably set the tone for the space. If you want to keep things paired back and minimal, we recommend opting for timeless neutrals like crisp whites or soft greys, as these types of neutral shades offer a versatile look that withstands changing trends.

…or add a pop of colour

Alternatively, you may wish to have a bit of fun with your colour palette and inject some personality into the space through the use of bold hues or subtle pastels. By playing around with more daring colours, you can transform your built-in wardrobe from a simple storage space into a real focal point within the room. For an elevated and cohesive design scheme, consider contrasting or complementing the wardrobe’s colour with the surrounding décor.

Neutral built-in wardrobes in a bedroom with a sloped ceiling

Working with sloped ceilings

Working with an attic room where sloped ceilings present a challenge? Built-in wardrobes offer the perfect solution for maximising your space, whilst doing away with awkward freestanding furniture that doesn’t quite fit. With a built-in wardrobe, you can embrace the unique angles of the space, blend with the room’s architecture, and optimise vertical storage.

Navy built-in wardrobes in the corner or a bedroom

…or utilising disused corners and recesses!

If you’re working with limited space, or a room that has lots of awkward nooks and crannies, built-in wardrobes present an ideal solution. Yep, we’re talking about utilising those otherwise disused corners of a room! That’s right, a smart design that works with corners or recesses, rather than against them, can really help you to get the most out of your space, maximise your storage options, and ensure every inch of your bedroom is being used productively.

Mirrored built-in wardrobes.

Mirror, mirror, on the…door?

To mirror or not to mirror, that is the question…at least, when it comes to designing your built-in wardrobes, that is.

Mirrored panels serve a dual purpose with these pieces of furniture, serving to enhance functionality whilst also visually expanding the room and creating a greater sense of open space. By introducing depth and light, mirrored panels are able to create an illusion of spaciousness, making them a great choice for bedrooms that are on the smaller side. Choose from full-length mirrored doors for a dramatic effect or smaller mirrored insets for a subtle touch of glamour. If you don’t want your mirrors to be on show, you can still incorporate them on the inside of your wardrobe doors, too.

Traditional detailing

For those who enjoy a touch of classic elegance, incorporating traditional detailing into your built-in wardrobe is a sure fire way to add a sense of refinement and sophistication to your bedroom. Intricate mouldings, raised panels, and decorative accents evoke a sense of timeless charm, infusing character into the space, and when paired with rich wood finishes, will achieve a sophisticated aesthetic that’s sure to stand the test of time.

Mix things up with different finishes

Whilst a uniform look is always a sound choice, it can be interesting to try combining different finishes for your built-in wardrobes, and ditch the notion that you have to stick to one style and one style only. By blending together contrasting finishes, such as glass, wood, matte colours, and gloss finishes, you can come up with something really unique. If this is something you’d be interested in exploring, a professional designer will be able to help you come up with something that breaks the rules in a way that really works.

Close up of handles om built-in wardrobes

Choose the right handles

Yes, handles bring functionality to your wardrobes, but they’re also important design accents, too, serving to enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of your built-in wardrobe and adding the perfect finishing touch.

You may be surprised just how much of a difference the right handle choice can make to your wardrobes, so it’s important to consider a wide array of options and make the right choice for your space. From minimalist integrated pulls or industrial-style T-bars, to ornate knobs that add a touch of individuality and opulence, there are plenty of options out there to consider, and it’s important to choose handles that resonate with the other elements of the design.

…or ditch the handles altogether!

For a sleek, ultra-minimal design, you can ditch the handles altogether. This is a great choice if you’re going for a modern, or uncluttered aesthetic in your space. The solution for handleless design? Simple push-catch fittings enable you to press lightly against the panel to gain access to what’s within. Alternatively, you could also consider recessed handles, too, to maintain a clean, uninterrupted façade.

Sliding door built-in wardrobes with LEDs

Integrated LED lighting

When it comes to finishing touches, integrated lighting is one of our favourite things to play around with. So, if you haven’t yet considered integrating LED lighting into your built-in wardrobe design, it could be time to do so. Elevating both functionality and ambiance, strategically placed LED strips spotlights not only enhance visibility but also highlight your wardrobe’s contents, and add a touch of luxury to the space. Dimmable options even allow for customisable lighting schemes, which means you can cater to changing moods and preferences. No more rummaging around for your socks on a dark winter’s morning? Check!
